Product Review: The Wacaco

Got this thing for a present years ago and utterly dismissed it. However a need had suddenly arisen in my life and it’s time had come. Would it pass the test?

I’m relatively please to say that it did. Though some disclaimers should be applied.

SO the Wacaco is basically a portable espresso machine. It looks like a sex toy or the worlds’s most drastic-looking female hygenic implement. But it’s about the size of two clenched fists side by side, or a fat bratwurst. I dunno, pick the fucking analogy you want.

Ease Of Use;
You do need to spend a few dedicated minutes studying the instruction manual, even with its helpful pictures. But if you can dedicate yourself to that, it’s not too hard to master.

Performance:

I had with me some pre-ground coffee, and had an electric kettle to boil water.

The scenario was that I needed a more economical way to conjure up a cup of the hallowed black brew, without having to spend money at the local cafe, as takeaway coffees are just becoming too expensive in our economy.

You load up the internal container with your shot of coffee, seal it up, flip the Wacaco over, and open the opposite end. You then fill the separated cup with water, screw the main body back on, flip once more, and pop-open the hand-pump. They say it’s a two-handed job but I was able to do it with one. Though I have a wide handspan. The espresso shot popped out in a few seconds and taster delish.

Probably my one true complaint can be issued here, which is the fiddliness of the cleanup. It seems easiest to just rinse out the component parts and let them stand-dry on a paper towel or tea towel over night. Obviously you ditch the used grinds, and there is also a mini-brush to dust off any coffee particles in the rim of the internals.

But overall i’ll rate this thing well. It served the need and is good for when you are stuck in a spot where you are just not gonna survive the day without a shot of coffee. Bear in mind you do still need some pre-ground coffee and a way to boil the water. This thingo does the rest.

Nicely, pleasantly and ergonomically designed. And I did like the smart-looking carry-pouch.

The Wacaco: Don’t leave Home without Yours TODAY!!! lest you be without coffee.

Halloween soundtrack for today:

The Once Bitten soundtrack: 42 mins in length. Once Bitten was Jim Carrey’s first movie, released in 1985, and is about him being pursued by a centuries-old female vampire who’s taken a romantic interest in him. It’s as good as it sounds.

Alternatively, watch the trailer.

It’s been a tough year and we could all use a hand.
